Roger Federer – The Greatest of All Time?

roger-federer-champion receiving a trophyThe much debated topic can never be put to rest. There was an era when John McEnroe’s rivalry with Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg were the hot topics of discussion, and then came the fabled Federer-Nadal rivalry, which has now evolved into a Federer-Djokovic affair.

While many believe that Federer’s haul of 17 Grand Slams is sheer luck as his major victories came in an era where he had to face an aging Agassi, a yet-to-blossom Novak, an injury ridden Nadal, a not so deserving numero uno Andy Roddick and a rusty Lleyton Hewitt; others prefer to think of it as the maestro’s way of making his opponents look like the Hulk’s reaction to Loki in the Avengers. – “Puny Gods!” So, the question is “can Federer be regarded as the Greatest of All Time in tennis?

The first man in 45 years to appear in the finals of all 4 Grand Slams in a year, Roger Federer stole the limelight in 2001 when the 19 year old sent the legendary Pete Sampras packing in the Fourth round of the Wimbledon. Though he went on to lose to the Brit Tim Henman in the very next match, Roger had proclaimed himself as the “Next Big Thing” in the world of tennis already.

His brilliant run started in 2003 when he won the Wimbledon, defeating Mark Philippoussis in the finals. In the same year, he rose to number 2 in the ATP world rankings by defeating the mighty Agassi in the year ending finals. The years of 2003 to 2007 were when the world got to witness the sublime class, the merciless winners, the elegant drop shots and the quirky volleys of the then 24 year old Federer.

roger-federer-sabreFederer went on to win a staggering 12 Grand Slams in this period. He dethroned the experienced and well-settled kings of tennis off their perch and ensured that the young guns didn’t bother him much, that was his prowess on the game.

He played as if his contemporaries participated in the tournaments for the sake of reaching of the Semi Finals and Finals. Federer won the Australian Open in 2007 without dropping a single set and became the first man since Borg to do so, in 26 years.

Federer’s major drawback was his Clay Court performance. The French Open victory in 2009, with a victory over Robin Soderling in the finals leaves still brings tears to his fans. It was a long, frustrating wait for a Career Slam, the road to which was blocked by Nadal every year at the Roland Garros.

Federer’s greatness lies in his innovation and out-of-the-box thinking when he plays his opponents. The Tweener was a dying tactic, revived byroger-federer-tweener Federer. He not only played the shot in tight Grand Slam matches but the one which lobbed over Sam Querrey in the second round of Wimbledon 2015 proves the man’s sheer dominance over his opponents.

The Sneak Attack by Federer tactic, the one which he uses against his opponents’ second serves, is the latest armor in his arsenal. The SABR, as it is popularly known, has proven to be mightily successful in thwarting off his opponents and taking them by surprise.

For a man who has won millions of hearts on and off the court, who has been named as the most popular and most loved player in the history of tennis, who has battered his opponents to several bagels in numerous matches, Roger Federer shall remain tennis’s biggest hero, irrespective of the outcome of his quest for the elusive 18th.
